Call for Applications for the 52nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York

Dear Law Student,
ELSA London is part of an international network of ELSA groups. ELSA (European Law Students' Association) has Observer status at various INGOs and NGOs. Part of the duty of an Observer organsiation is to actually "observe". To this end, ELSA regularly issues calls for members to apply to participate in international delegations. It is now that time of year again ...

ELSA International will send an observer delegation to the 52nd Session of the ECOSOC Commission on the Status of Women. We are hereby inviting you to take part at the United Nations Headquarters, in New York, USA, from the 25th February to the 7th March 2008.

A summary of the provisional agenda and additional information for this session of the Commission is available on the ECOSOC website

The ELSA participants in the Delegation to this ECOSOC Session will have to undertake the following activities:

Represent ELSA International;

  • Observe proceedings of the session (attend the meetings);
  • Carry out legal research in the framework of the Session on the relevant legal topics;
  • Distribute the revised editions of the relevant ELSA materials to other delegations and organisations;
  • Attend briefings and meetings organised by the Head of the ELSA Delegation and report to the Head of Delegation all activities carried out;
  • Forward all the contacts made during the session to ELSA International, to ensure that the whole ELSA Network will benefit from them;
  • Give feedback to the Association by: submitting a report to ELSA International within a month after the end of the session; filling out a questionnaire and send it together with the report; being available to give a presentation to requesting Local Groups in the applicant's country.

ELSA will not facilitate the travel or other arrangements of subsistence of any members of the ELSA delegation. All arrangements surrounding travel, accommodation and daily subsistence costs are the exclusive responsibility of the participants themselves. However, ELSA can assist the participants by providing, upon request, Recommendation Letters for fundraising purposes, or Invitation Letters for those who need a visa to enter the American territory.

Application to any ELSA delegations is restricted to current ELSA members. Since ELSA London formed in 2005, we have had a fairly impressive track record in getting our members accepted for delegations. In total 38 London members have participated in international delegations observing the UN, UNCITRAL, WIPO among others. This is all the more impressive when one considers that there are more than 220 ELSA groups based in 35 countries whose members are all eligible to apply.

Deadline for Applications 18 Nov 2007.

If you have not yet joined ELSA London but would like to apply for the above delegation, please email us for more info. You may also download a Membership Application form from here.
