EVENT: Conference
DATE: Saturday 28th February 2009
TIME: 09.30 - 19.00 (best to arrive before start time to get a seat in the main hall!)
VENUE: Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Street WC1H 0AL (in the Logan Hall and adjoining rooms)
COST: £20 if student or £15 if part of ELSA group (must register on our FB group to be sent discount code!)
The Convention will be a one day gathering of 1,000 people on Saturday 28 February 2009 at the Institute for Education in central London and as many again in the parallel regional and national meetings in Belfast, Bristol, Cambridge, Glasgow, Manchester, and - hopefully - Cardiff. It is being sponsored by Rowntrees, openDemocracy, Liberty and the Guardian.
The main theatre will host a plenary session in the morning with a panel of nationally distinguished speakers from across the political spectrum discussing “The crisis of fundamental rights and freedoms”. There will be two sets of ten parallel sessions in the afternoon each focused on a different question relating to Modern Liberty. Their panels are being sponsored and organised by a wide range of interested organisations. There will be a final plenary session in the main hall on “Freedom and democracy after the market meltdown” followed by an informal discussion of the day over drinks (see here for a full programme).
The regional and national events across the UK will take a webcast of the plenary sessions and host their own discussions. No2ID will be co-ordinating these in partnership with Unlock Democracy and Amnesty. There will be an open invite to others to hold their own meetings and events in the following weeks.
ELSA will be attending this important civil liberties conference. If you wish to join us at the convention, be part of the ELSA group, meet like-minded people, hopefully make new friends whilst at the same time saving yourself £5 on the standard fee, you would be very welcome. Please register on the Facebook group which has been created for this event. The actual convention takes place on Saturday 28th February but in order to get to know each other and also make preparations, it is proposed to arrange a social meeting for everyone registered on the FB group.
ELSA is determined to make human rights and civil liberties an important part of our association. We are looking for people with ideas, passion, drive, enthusiasm and ambition to take a lead role in developing this area within our association. If you are at all interested in being part of the new Human Rights team, send an email with your CV and, if possible, an outline of your ideas on how to develop Human Rights within ELSA to: human@elsalondon.org. If chosen you will have a lot of responsibility and also a lot of freedom to develop your ideas. We are not a bureaucratic association and officers are allowed a certain degree of independence to develop their areas.
