If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", then look no further ...
Translegal together with Cambridge University ESOL Examinations have developed a brand new International Legal English Certificate (ILEC) especially for you.
With the Cambridge ILEC, you will be able to demonstrate to potential employers and law schools that you possess a high standard of Legal English. The Cambridge ILEC is the first specialised language certificate created specifically for international law students and lawyers who wish to, or need to, demonstrate their fluency in English. It is equivalent in level to the Cambridge First Certificate in English and the Certificate in Advanced English. The difference being that the ILEC assesses language skills in a legal context.
ILEC exams will be held twice a year (May and November), starting this year, 2006. The fact that the course has been developed by international lawyer-linguists, Translegal, and world famous Cambridge ESOL experts guarantees the pedigree of this new certificate. In fact, the Cambridge ILEC is already recognised by leading associations of lawyers including the European Company Lawyers Association, the International Association of Young Lawyers and the European Young Bar Association. ELSA is also strongly in support of this new qualification as we recognise that there has long been a need for a specific English language qualification aimed just for lawyers.
Exam Structure
The exam will take approximately four hours and you will be tested in four areas:
The ILEC exam is based on realistic tasks of the kind that legal practitioners would be expected to encounter in their daily working lives. Successful ILEC candidates are able to use language in practical situations, to participate in meetings and discussions of a legal nature, express opinions clearly and are able to understand and to produce texts of various types, including legal letters, memoranda and proposals.
Grading and Certification
Written papers will be marked by Cambridge ESOL examiners. Results are normally reported within six weeks of the test date. There is a range of passing and failing grades to distinguish levels of performance.
All candidates receive a statement of results showing their performance on each of the four papers and an overall grade, and candidates who achieve passing grades will receive an official certificate awarded by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

ELSA London intends to organise a presentation by Translegal in mid-February. We would like to invite all international law students and young lawyers interested in perhaps taking the ILEC exam to come along. You do not have to be an ELSA London member to come along to the presentation. The ILEC exam is open to anyone who wants to sit it. However, if you would like to join ELSA London, please bring along your completed membership forms and the £10 membership fee. You will be able to join immediately. ELSA members receive a 25% discount.
If you are interested in coming to the Translegal presentation next month, please send an email - put "Translegal" in the subject line.
It is important that you email your interest so that we have an idea of the numbers. This will enable us to book an appropriately sized room. The date of the presentation is tbc but will be in late February/early March. Remember that you are not committing yourself to anything by emailing or by coming to the presentation. We are simply offering you a chance to find out a bit more about this new exam, and the opportunity to meet & question the lawyers behind it.
